Preliminary Deliberations on Proposed Solutions to Restore Genuine Palestinian Rights

An Opening Word

My decision to initiate this discussion was stimulated by a number of articles that appeared in Kanaanonline e-Bulletin over the last ten months, on the issue of the “one-state solution”, and by the encouragement of the editors of Kanaanonline.

Before delving in the deliberations on the proposed “one-state” ideas, I want to make two comments:

Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to stress the pattern of continuity in Palestine’s modern history, beginning with the late Ottoman Period, as a geo-political entity with its own cultural cohesiveness and distinctiveness. The search is for both the political structures that existed and those offered as alternatives.

Each year, in preparation for Israel's birthday, American newspaper editors feel an urge to invite Arab writers to tell us why Israel should not exist. Typical this year were the Los Angeles Times (Opinion, May 12 "Forget the two-state solution", by Saree Makdisi) and the Christian Science Monitor (Ghada Karmi "A One-state Solution for Palestinians and Israelis", May 30, 2008), where the elimination of Israel were advanced under the usual euphemism of a "one-state solution."

Introduction:

This paper is written as a contribution to the discussion in the Anti Imperialist Camp about perspectives for work within the imperialist countries. The situation in Palestine is very different from that of Europe or the US. Since the beginning of the Zionist colonization of Palestine, some 130 years ago, Jews in Palestine were a small enclave of settler population in the midst of the Arab homeland. Colonialism is not external expansionism of some imaginary “western-capitalist Israel”, but the essence of Israel’s existence.

This article is a rejoinder to your document, titled :Why the Socialist Solution in Palestine! And why the Secular Democratic State will serve the Zionist and Arab Comprador Solution! (Kanaan online bulletin; Volume VIII, Issue 1592 - 11/7/2008)*

I have read your document with great attention, and wish here to present a rebuttal of several of its points.

On behalf of the Green Party of the United States, I send our best wishes to you for a very productive conference on the right of return. I'm sorry that I can not be with you. What you are doing is very important, especially right there in Israel.

As you may know the Green Party of the US affirms the right of return for Palestinian refugees and the goal of one secular democratic state in all of historic Palestine.

Every liberation struggle requires mechanisms for thought, collective deliberation, and for united action. The stronger these mechanisms are, the more vibrant the struggle, and the more it can draw upon the creative energy and participation of its people. This mobilizing mechanism is the foundation in all struggles. This fact was widely recognised within our own traditon and liberation movement of previous generations.

Now that Kosovo is the newest independent state to emerge out of the ruins of the former Yugoslavia parallels are being drawn between the Balkans and the Middle East. One response to this development came from Israeli foreign Minister Tzipi Livini who said that as she does not mind if the Palestinians follow the Kosovars and declare statehood; what worries her is that Palestinians will demand equal rights with Israelis.
